Nadi Astrology

Nadi Astrology is very popular now a days but very few people seem to have profound knowledge of this ancient branch of Astrology. I am going to write about some of the concepts of Nadi Astrology known to me which might take a few posts as these concepts cannot be explained in a single post.

This branch of Astrology is known as Nadi Astrology or Nadi Jyotisham in South India and as Bhrigu Samhita in North India. There is no definite information as how ancient it is or as to who were its originators. They say - there‘s no smoke without fire. Given the accurate level of Nadi predictions, we guess that a lot of research must have been done in this field of Astrology in the ancient past.

Let’s start with a story. Satyacharya is a legend in Astrology who belonged to a much older generation than Varahamihira who is believed to have lived in 2nd century A.D. We find a mention in Varahamihira’s ‘Brihat Jataka’ that Satyacharya’s method of calculating the lifespan of a person is said to be the best among all the available methods. This reference puts Satyacharya somewhere BC.

Satyacharya is considered to be the propounder of Nadi Astrology. There is a popular legend regarding this.

Satyacharya was a great scholar of his times and mastered the subject of Astrology thoroughly well. However, to his dismay, he failed always to predict the events in a horoscope accurately. He had many doubts and questions as to why the results are not accurate. As advised by a guru he did severe penance for Lord Shiva to get his questions answered.

Lord Shiva, impressed by the severe penance of Satyacharya, appeared before him and answered him with a smile ‘Son! what you have mastered is Macro (gross) Astrology which cannot give accurate results. There is Micro (subtle) Astrology by which the past, present and future lives of a person can be predicted very precisely. To understand this, you need to know the Nadi Amsa. If you correlate the Pancha Bhuta Tatvas (Five elements of Nature), Kala Vibhajana (division of time) and Nadi Amsa then you can understand everything.’ Thus, with Lord Shiva’s grace Satyacharya mastered Nadi Astrology and acquired the knowledge of past, present and future times. The treatise written by him is known as Satya Nadi or Dhruva Nadi.

There are many treatises available on Nadi Astrology. B.V. Raman, in his autobiography mentions that only the predictions done using the Markendeya Nadi are accurate. There are many other Nadi books like Koumara Nadi, Vasishtha Nadi, Agastya Nadi, Bhrigu Nadi and Bhusunda Nadi etc.,

Now a days, Nadi Astrology is a big business and we find many people who deceive the gullible under the shadow of Nadi Astrology. Many Nadi Astrologers are found in cities like Vaitheeswaran Koil, Kanchi, Chennai, Kumbakonam, Bangalore and even in New Delhi. It is really hard to find at least one genuine Nadi Astrologer among all these folks.
