Vaisakha Shuddha Purnima is the day when Gautama Buddha attained Nirvana. This is an important day for Buddhists. This is because Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and Nirvana occurred on this day. Just like how the full moon spreads its brightness on the world, the same way Buddha taught the world how to destroy sorrow.
What is the knowledge that Lord Buddha discovered and taught the world? This can be summed up in a few words.
1. The Four Noble Truths
2. The Noble Eight fold Path
Lord Buddha explained that the knowledge he has obtained is twofold.
1. Experience the Four Noble truths
2. Experience the Law of Dependent Origination.
Four Noble truths:
1. Truth of suffering
2. Truth of the cause of suffering
3. Truth of the end of suffering
4. Truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering
Noble Eight fold path:
1. Right View
2. Right Resolve
3. Right Speech
4. Right Conduct
5. Right Livelihood
6. Right Effort
7. Right Mindfulness
8. Right Samadhi
These are again classified as precepts, meditation and wisdom. This classification will help us to understand Buddha’s vision, thoughts and teachings in a clear way.
