Fundamental principles of Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy is one of the alternative systems of medicine that I know of. In this post, let us examine the fundamental principles of this system of medicine.

This has been formulated by a German named Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. For the moment, we shall focus only on the principles of Homoeopathy.

The method of homoeopathy primarily depends upon four principles.

1. Individualism: Every human being is unique by himself. There is an opinion that there are seven people existing in this world, who look alike. However, they are not completely identical, there exist many physical and psychological differences among them. The flow of pranic energy also varies in each person. Therefore, the medicines given for a disease, without observing these differences, cannot provide complete health to that person, since we are not taking the pranic energy of the individual into consideration. This pranic energy is not the same for each individual. Therefore, we have to take it into account invariably, because the disease is nothing but deviation in pranic energy.

2. Dynamism: Disease is a type of energy. It is not an external inert material. It is a life force that can spread internally. Today, modern science says that microorganisms such as bacteria, virus etc.; are the reasons behind the diseases. However, if the pranic force is strong, no disease can harm the body. Therefore, it is the fundamental flaw in life force that is the cause of a disease, and not the microorganisms. The deficiency formed in life force at the pranic level, cannot be treated by medicines given at the physical level. Only natural medicines that have been changed into potencies, can overcome the defects in the life force.

3. Totality Of Symptoms: Man is not a lifeless machine. He is filled with life. He is a combination of body, mind and life force. When a disease is formed, imbalances are clearly visible at each of these three levels. Therefore, the disease is to be perceived as a compiled form of all these traits put together. It is not the right method to give specialist treatment by looking at each aspect individually.

4. Law of Similars: If a medicine can bring specific changes in a healthy man, it can prevent the same changes in an unhealthy man. This is known as the principle of ‘Similia Similibus Curentur’ or ‘Like cures like’. In some people’s opinion, this principle is embedded in the old sayings such as ‘Applying heat pacifies heat’, ‘Use a thorn to remove another thorn’, ‘Only a diamond can cut another diamond’. However, Dr.Samuel Hahnemann gained the credit for authenticating and giving a proper form to this principle.

These four principles are the cornerstones of the system of Homoeopathic medicine.
